About this deal

In the second half, as each soldier is interviewed in Vietnam, we stay with them and watch their pauses and stammering and the gradual unveiling of their thought processes; who they want to be seen as to everyone watching at home in the USA. Full Metal Jacket comes to UK 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray courtesy of Warner who once again deliver the goods following their excellent 4K releases of 2001 and The Shining ( Spartacus and Dr. com is an Introducer Appointed Representative of Pay4Later Limited, trading as Deko, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 728646). But near the end, “where you just saw Modine not speaking, not acting, but just kind of being,” is what got him the role, said Hughes.

Modine is supported early by breakout performances from Vincent D’Onofrio, as a fellow recruit named “Gomer” who can’t quite cut it in training, and Lee Ermey, as their ramrod gunnery sergeant and drill instructor. It’s worth noting that the 2012 BD arrived in Blu-ray Book packaging that included a bonus DVD of the Stanley Kubrick’s Boxes documentary—that documentary is not included here. Later on, it’s Arlis Howard and Adam Baldwin who shine as members of “Lusthog” squad, whom Joker—now a correspondent for Stars and Stripes—has been sent to cover through a series of brutal patrols during the Battle of Huế in 1968. There’s no obvious CGI or green-screen work here, with helicopters flying over the heads of actors, large numbers of extras and some terrific set-dressing with the ruined buildings littered around Vietnam.

The overall image quality is very good, though not quite as good as we’ve seen on some of the studio’s more recent Kubrick restorations. They afford us a tremendous native 4K presentation for this Ultra HD Blu-ray release, which really revels in director Stanley Kubrick's, here understated but nonetheless distinctive, colour palette. Overall, the bonus materials here are just the original 2007 Blu-ray extras (on that disc) as well as the audio commentary also on the 4K disc. The black level is perfectly solid here, and that’s many thanks to the addition of HDR10 form of high dynamic range. Stanley Kubrick immediately yelled cut and went over to Ermey and asked, "What the hell is a reach-around?

To create a realistic effect during Vietnam battle scenes, DP Douglas Milsome experimented with a camera with a shutter thrown off sync. It took him seven months to put the weight on, and nine months to take it off with physical training. Natural film grain is much more pronounced with a much higher level of clarity than previous editions.
