Bothy tales gets under way at 6.30pm on Monday, November 13 while Eleanor's event begins at the same time the following day. Both sessions will include an audience Q&A and a chance to buy signed copies of books. The combination of John’s love of the outdoors with his passion for writing and performance makes him a uniquely powerful storyteller. In his writing, John tells tales of his travels in the mountains, in his performance he talks of the profound relationship between men and wild places. There is a bond between these folk and the landscape they love. That union is the true value of bothies And, after rescuing the Angus butter-making tradition, the range will be produced less than a third of a mile from Forfar’s historic Buttermarket area.

Long stems, a deep-red colour with greenish streaks, and unfurled leaves are signs that rhubarb is ripe. Leave the leaves alone; they contain poisonous oxalic acid. Otherwise, enjoy the health benefits of robust rhubarb: it's rich in vitamin C, vitamin K, and high in fibre. You can eat the stalks raw, but most prefer them cooked. Step into the world of the Scottish hills and immerse yourself in the captivating narratives of "Bothy Tales." Authored by John D. Burns, this book takes you on a journey through the rugged landscapes of Scotland, offering a collection of vivid stories that are rich in detail and steeped in the essence of the outdoors. The era of restoration may have ended for the bothies of the Cairngorms, but the next era is bound to be equally valuable, as new generations fall in love with these wild places. Not long from now another young man or woman will blunder through a bothy door and find themselves sitting beside the fire contemplating the wonders of a newly discovered world. Long may it continue. By basing our product on Hamish’s recipe and using his churn, we will put our own unique Bothy slant on the butter to create a really special product.” Gary Morrison-Lundie of Alex Spink and Sons said: “Smoking fish in the traditional method in a bothy smokehouse is one of the few traditional skillsets still being passed down the generations, using the same techniques and equipment as generations before us. Using that knowledge in new ways creates a connection with other parts of Scottish culture, keeping it alive and in our communities.”

Summary

Saltire award-winning novelist, Eleanor Thom, will be talking about her second novel, Connective Tissue. Eleanor’s story is inspired by the life of her grandmother who settled in Elgin, marrying Duncan Wilson in 1942, after being exiled to the UK aged 22. She'd been forced to leave her one-year-old daughter behind in Germany. The child was killed in the gas chambers in Auschwitz with Jewish relatives. Tropical fruits: refreshingly juicy and easy to make, pineapple and passionfruit is an exciting alternative to regular jam. Tropical fruits are nearly devoid of pectin though, and must be combined with pectin-loaded fruit or extra sugar to create a bonding gel.

Gin Bothy founder, Kim Cameron said: “With a growing team and demand for our products, our office and storage space simply needed to grow to support demand. This is an incredibly exciting move for the team as the Forfar facility gives us room to expand, create several more jobs and means we don’t have to outsource warehousing.” Although a self-taught cook, Harrison’s journey to leading a life and career as an outdoor cook, hiker and mental health speaker only began in 2016 when he reached a point where he knew he needed to turn his life around. AN Award-winning spirits manufacturer is launching a hand-crafted artisan butter - keeping alive the centuries-old tradition of Angus butter-making. Kim used leftover fruit juice from her homemade jam to lead the charge for the creation of Scottish flavoured spirits with the launch of her Gin Bothy Raspberry Gin.This area is the home of Clan Cameron and as a Cameron I have listened to the tales and importance in history of Achnacarry from my dad of my great grandad’s quest to find the hidden gold said to be deep in the hills, the opportunity to visit was so special and felt like an adventure to paths of old. A brand-new spirit range from the Best Artisan Drinks Producer 2020 (Scottish Rural Awards) Gin Bothy, Hipflask Spirits, launches today, Friday 8 th January 2021. Hipflask Sloe Bramble has already been selected as one of Aldi’s next top products and will be available in all Scottish stores in spring this year.

The man's attitude towards the outdoors really grated on me when reading this book. It seems to be that everyone who hasn't worked for mountain rescue is a moron in the mountains. The section labelling all the types of people you find at a bothy falls spectacularly short of being funny, and comes across as vacuous - as though he thinks he is the only one with any right to the mountain bothy because he's not a Munro bagger or because he doesn't rely on technology at all to get him from A to B. Technology has saved countless lives in the wilderness, a fact that seems utterly lost on a man who sees only with the eyes of an older generation that regard such things as pure evil. The outpouring of support I received was huge and I found it really empowering and I uncovered lots of other stories of people who have found the outdoors to try and recover.” Sales will initially be limited to the Bothy Experience shop in Glamis or the newly-opened Bothy Larder on 6 Lochside Road, Forfar.

And the fact his family legacy will live on through a butter recipe devised by his mum and grandmother Frances McLeod, fills Hamish with pride.. If you have a special occasion coming up, why not book a tasting to celebrate? Our private tastings are perfect for birthdays, hen or stag parties! The bride, groom or guest of honour will receive their box for free if you book 15 boxes or more. I suppose not many people would be keen to give up the luxury of modern living and spend time in bothies where the only heat comes from the coal that you carry in and the only light comes from your candles" he says.
